Should You Buy a Dog Seat Belt?

It may seem like a trivial matter but dog seat belts are really important for both you and your dog. Some countries around the world have already passed laws making it illegal not to have a dog seat belt harness fitted in your car if you have a dog traveling with you. Just because it is the the law though, shouldn’t be the reason why you get one. If you own a dog then having a dog seat belt just makes sense.

There are two man reasons why dog seat belts are important, the first one is pretty obvious, it can save your dog’s life if you are involved in a crash. The statistics are shocking concerning the fatality rate of dogs involved in car crashes. Because dogs are a lot smaller than humans and a lot lighter, they are very easily thrown out of the car or smashed against the windshield during a car crash.

There often so many stories of families surviving a car crash and yet their pet dog was killed. You won’t let your children travel without a seat belt so why let your dog? Dog seat belts save lives.

The second reason is because dogs can often get excited and jump around on the back seat, particularly if they see another dog outside. A surprising number of car crashes are caused by dog owners reaching back round to control their dog in the back seat. Obviously a dog seat belt stops this.

There is no one best dog seat belt that you can buy. They all do the job and they are all pretty cheap. The most important thing is that you find one that fits your dog well.

The other main things to consider is that your dog may become agitated if it is confined in a dog seat belt harness. You’ll find that some dog seat belt harnesses are attached to a lead that you can extend. These types of dog seat belt can give your dog some room to move around and still  keep your dog safe.

Most dog seat belts only cost the same price as a few tins of dog food so you really shouldn’t put off buying one for your dog.
